Based on my observations of some weddings I've attended, wedding doves don't really fly high, especially in covered reception areas. Worse, if no one catches them right away, they might end up on the guests' table, flapping their wings, spilling food... i don't know... thank God I haven't seen this happen in any of the weddings I've ever attended.
I also find handling the dove too icky. We might have just skipped this release of wedding doves ceremony, but I've already deviated from a lot of common wedding practices. This time I wanted to follow tradition.
Of course that would mean me holding a dove. Ew! I decided to just have the dove release right after the pictorials outside the church, just when the guests have begun to move to the reception area. That way, only a few people could see me if there are any bloopers/disasters coming up. ;-)
Holding a dove was one of the concerns I brought up with my OTD angel, Roma. She suggested that the bride is usually given the "tamer" one, so the groom can handle the "fussy" one. Okay. I guess I can survive this after all.
And yes, I was very glad I decided to push through with the doves release. It gave way for this nice picture. And it made my wedding more... wedding-y... like I didn't really skip a lot of traditions. Yay.

As expected, they didn't fly high. They were easily caught and were placed back into their cage. It was brought home by my nephew, who LOOOOOOVES all kinds of animals. He was able to take care of them for months before they decided to leave their cage in the garden and flew away.
